I worked for a small Media Relations firm for two years, nine months. My job was to get clients quoted in the press in ways that help build their business.
On a Monday in December, an article in The Wall Street Journal quoted a client. This was quite a coup. In the PR world, there is nothing better than being in the Journal. The next day, my boss closed the door to my office, sat down and told me that the client had cut their budget and she was letting me go.
I said, “You’re kidding! I’m the best you’ve got! I was in the Wall Street Journal yesterday.”
But having been there the longest, I was the highest paid, so she saw a chance to cut her expenses.
So, not only was I the most productive, and I trained the entire team, I got nothing in return for being a team player.
PS She went to Florida for a Christmas vacation.
