NEVER LOOKING BACK!!!!!

The news hit me out of no where and even with the crippling economy, I was very shocked to hear the words, “I have to let you go” spew from the lips of my former boss.

Here is a little history about my employment with the company.

I worked in Sales and Marketing for an education company which specialized in international language programs for 3 years.

During the first quarter of this year, my sales exceeded my quota and I was the only person on the sales team to receive a bonus.

A week or so later I received an e-mail from my manager stating that my bonus would not be paid right away due to the nagging money problems that the company was facing. My response to her was that I wanted a firm date in which my bonus would be paid because I did not want to constantly remind our boss of his outstanding debt to me. She assured me that she would talk to him about it and get back to me…….

Two weeks pass and my boss calls me into his office. At this point my bonus had not been paid, so I entered the room assuming that our meeting would address this issue of my outstanding bonus.

To my shock, he leaned back in his chair and said “This is not good news… I’m going to have to let you go”….

During our meeting he expressed his sadness and blamed the recession. I noted that the recession was not making the decision to “let me go,” he was.

After our meeting I shook his hand and left with my head held high.

I am actually very happy that it happened because it forced me to take some serious stalk of my life, and I have decided to go back to school and get an MBA in marketing.

I’m already taking some classes at a college close to my house and am loving all the free time that I have to finish my books of poetry and children stories.

I am living in the moment and never looking back!!!!

I love your optimism and positivity! Taking courses at a local college is a brilliant idea, I too am taking courses online- I like the challenge, and honestly it gets my fiance off my back for a while 🙂 Which courses are you taking? Hopefully with these new stimulus jobs being made you wont be unemployed much longer!

    Hey Melissa!!!

    Thanks for your comment!

I wish I could say that I instantly bounced into this positive state, but I went through all of the stages that revolve around coping with this type of situation.

    First it was denail –

They made a made a mistake. I really haven’t been “let go”. They’re gonna call any minute and apologize.

    Next was Barganing –

Maybe if I do this… they will do that…..

    This was followed by ANGER.

Those F-N idiots!!! I hope that the building burns and the company tanks!!! They deserve to suffer!!!

I tried to skip this one but couldn’t- Sadness and confusion.

After I out- performed my peers I get the ax???

Luckily this was swiftly followed by Acceptance.

” This is a huge opportunity for me! I am going to use this time constructively and do what I have always wanted to do but had no time because of my “J..O..B”.

Now to answer your question…. **) Er.. thanks for reading this far!

I am taking an Advertising and Intro to Business Course. My goal is to earn a Marketing certificate from the college that I am attending. The next step is to take the GMAT and get my MBA application togeter and then attend the school of my choice. **) (YEAH!!)

In addition to this, I am writing a lot of poetry (Ironically enough inspired by my recent job loss- THANK YOU FORMER BOSS!!!) and have completed a children’s novel. I’m editing it right now and am looking to begin a more adult novel (adult meaning my audience.. not the subject matter **).

At this point I want to stay busy doing things that I am passionate about!

How about you though? Which courses are you taking? It’s good to know that they are keeping your fiance off your back! LOL!

I am also curious to find out what inspires you? You also sound like a positive person, so I would like to know…. currently… what gives you the most happiness and why?

    Look forward to your reply!

    A.

haha your reply killed me! You’re a fantastic writer! I understand completely the whole steps of coping. It wasn’t too long ago I too was wishing my bosses would somehow call me to apologize- and if not rot in hell! (how dare they!)
I’m actually taking courses online with NEF University. They have course bundles specifically for the new stimulus jobs (my package in particular is for IT, and I also signed up for the MS Suite) honestly, this may be my best idea yet! Hopefully I’ll get one of those new IT jobs from the stimulus plan… if not I only wasted about 50 bucks on classes haha

hmm what am I passionate about.. I LOVE that question! To be completely honest, I feel like I’m passionate about so much! I’ve been volunteering for UNICEF for over 3 years, and absolutely love it. I’m huge on community involvement and love working with children. Also I have a niece whos almost 5 months old, and I love her- not to mention my family as a whole! (see I can ramble about this stuff forever!) but yeah, thats just a bit of what I love 🙂 I guess this is also a place to plug that I’m completely in love with my fiance! To be honest, he’s my biggest motivator in life!

Its refreshing to know theres positive people in this world!-thanks!

Its so awesome that you are doing what you want and need to do!! I have thought about going back to school but I then remember I am 51 years old. Too old perhaps? I am receiving unemployment and it indicates I am suppose to let them know if I go to schooling or training, I suppose so they can cut off my funds. What a dumb system. A person can’t get a job in what they know, so they want to get re-trained in something else, but if they do, they’ll get their unemployment checks cut off?????? I feel so stuck!!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this. I am trying to look at things in a positive light like you. It’s kind of hard but I’m trying. Even tho I don’t want to leave my job I’m starting to get antsy for the end of the month to come so I can go ahead and get out of here! Having the date just looming over my head is killing me. I can’t wait to just start enjoying my summer off!

Gail, It’s never to late! Honestly! Its funny around the same time I was got laid off, so did my mother (whos heading around 60) I let her know about the NEF courses I’m taking and she signed up as well. I’d definitely look into it, please don’t feel stuck-although a normal feeling and completely understandable- there are organizations out there who genuinely want to help. the National Education Foundation (NEF University) really sold me because as a nonprofit its not like they gain anything by offering these course. Plus its such an afforable price. Good Luck to both of you! Enjoy yourselves and the summer 🙂

    Hey Gail, Amanda, and Melissa,

    Thanks for responding!

Gail… please do not feel stuck! I totally agree with Melissa. It is never too late to pursue your dreams!

I think that you should take advantage of all the tools available to you including the link that Melissa so generously provided.

I also have days when I feel stuck, but in those moments I remember that even baby steps will get me to my goal as long as I am moving forward. This takes my mind away from the austentatious goals that I want to accomplish and brings me back to the present. It is here that I realize that the culmination of these small steps will ensure the accomplishement of my goals.

I have also drafted a 3 year plan along with weekly goals that are tied to my overall 3 year vision.

I review both plans often and have created a support network that includes my family and friends. I am lucky because they are very good at keeping me focussed. Sometimes… they are a bit too diligent **)

I really hope that you do not talk yourself out of moving forward because of a self imposed barrior. I will not lie to you. It is hard and it will be difficult, but everything worth accomplishing is. I have faith, however, that your resolve to push forward will lead you towards accomplishing your goals. And I am rooting for you to succeed because one of the best rewards in life is to fly when you are thrown off a clif!

    Amanda,

I hope that you enjoy your summer off!!! By the sound of it, I believe that you will. Have you planned anything specific that you are loooking forward to?

    Melissa,

    Thanks once again for responding!

It is so cool to hear about all of your passions. Volunteering for UNICEF and being involved in community work is awesome!! You sound really proud of your neice and I am sure she knows this. Also, it sounds like you have a strong support system which is wonderful at a time like this.

    Looking forward to your responses!

    A.
