After Coming Back from the Company Picnic

I worked for a Civil Environmental Consultant group out of Pittsburgh in another state. In early 2005 I quit my job in a very small engineering firm in town (14 employees), because they offered more money and a promotion, all this was during the housing boom coming to an end. Toward the end of 2006 I started to notice that our volume of work in the residential was 50% less than a year ago and that new bosses were coming in and old bosses were coming out. I thought that maybe it was a shake down in management, I seen it before with other companies, so i didn’t pay much attention to it. In the meantime due to lack of work we were assigned to work on other departments or we were given other tasks and/or projects from other offices in other states. I had the luck of working in a project with another office (TN), translating a document from English to Spanish for the University a very technical and extensive project.

Two months before my lay off an email was sent to all the employees about the picnic, so I decided to go because it was going to be our mini-vacation in PA I live in Ohio.

Everything was fine when I came back work, but right before it was time for me to go home, my boss told that he needed to talk to me and then he gave me news that I was lay off and I wasn’t the only one today, I told him that I knew the routine (I have been laid off before), we shake hand, sign papers and out the door I went.

Tuesday late afternoon he called me at home and ask me if I could go back and finish the project for the other office which was due the following monday and that it was going to be very hard if not impossible to find someone who could translate the project due to the complexity and the use of technical terms and if I could come to the office and finish it. and that I didn’t have to give him my answer right away but he would like to have it not later than first thing in the morning.

After I hang up, I started to analized what he had just asked me, so I called him right back and I said to him “due to events of yesterday I believe that’s a company priority and not one of mine therefore he would have to find someone else to finished it”. The only thing that I regret is that I should have waited until wednesday or thursday late afternoon to give him my answer.

That happened to me. I was working at a software development company in the Philippines managing project management and Japanese mobile phone application development. We had a mandatory company outing on a Saturday. On Monday, everyone was laid off. We were being outsourced to India. At least the Japanese severence pay was good. I got to pursue my real goal – game development.

Why not agree to come back and do it as a contractor for an exorbitant hourly rate, and then TAKE YOUR SWEET TIME? Stretch a few days’ worth of work to a few weeks, and collect the check.

ANA, I did not made this up, I got laid off either monday or tuesday (company policy), I made a few calls due to the facts that I HAD MY NETWORK current, and, I had an interview EITHER wednesday or thursday, I was working full time on monday in a contract, and they were paying me 3 times(can you believed it was like they were paying $1.00 and keeping over $2.000 for themselves, No Insurance but, but do you really needed when you are making 3 times what you you used to make, you can buy your own).

It was 60 to 70 hours week to and I never complained, because I told my wife that it was better to have the money now rather than later than not having any at all.

It made me realized that you have your own destiny in these times of CRISIS and that you are in command.

ANOTHER STEVE: I did not came back at my old job as a contractor because of my pride and it was not my problem anymore, they had to deal with it when when told me that my services were not required were all files were DESTROYED within 1 hour as soon I got home, hint just bill them regardless of what you have even if it is the ABC tell them that it is code and that you are not require to explain to them because it is very complex…..and if they ask you tell them that you are not an employee anymore you can just (just give them the round around) because the one who needs your brains it is them, from the moment you get laid off you are an independent contractor!!!!
why should I worry when they don’t care about me or my family I am just number for profit and my family it is just a cassualty!!!!

Just a note that my boss that laid off he is JOBLESS (He was LAID OFF also) I am a religuous person but THANKS GOD!!!!! HEY BOSS WELCOME TO MY CLUB, I hope I see you at the Soup Kitchen

Well … it didn’t shock me but the timing was malicious. I had just come off of short term disability only for two days to get approval for surgery. It was on Wednesday and I was to have a pre approval from a Cardiologist on Friday so I could have surgery. I did’nt want to leave my company in a bind so I figured I could be of some help for a few days before surgery. I have been with my company 15 years. They laid me off at 10:30 am the morning I went back. All of the company members involved in this knew I was to have surgery. You can’t even have surgery and be unavailable for a job to collect unemployement. They could have given me the time for surgery and then done what they needed. I gave them 15 years of very hard dedicated work. This was cruel. Thanks a lot USA TODAY!
