“As long as I\’m here, you\’re not going anywhere.”

I used to work in the music industry and put countless after hour and weekend time into this job. A few people from my division were laid off and so i became alarmed. On Monday of the following week, I went into my boss\’ office and asked if i was going to be asked to leave just like the others and he assured me, “As long as i\’m here, you\’re not going anywhere.” At that moment i felt a big sense of relief to know that i\’d be okay, at least until my boss held his position.

That Thursday he called to let me know that he had outside meetings all day and asked me to finish his expense reports. He said he wanted them complete and submitted before I left work for the day and also asked me to call him when i left the office. Since he was behind on expense reports, I stayed until 9pm to finish. As soon as i got to my car i called him and he apologized for having to tell me this over the phone…he said he “tried to come into the office and tell me in person, but didn\’t have a chance to”. And continued, “we had to make some cutbacks and we have to let you go. Your last day is tomorrow.” I drove back to work, packed up all of my personal belongings and told them i wouldn\’t be coming in the next day. I separated all files by artist, events, etc., so that they wouldn\’t have a hard time finding them.

I still keep in contact with everyone, because you shouldn\’t burn bridges. Oh yeah, and my ex-boss still holds that position.

    I had a similar experience in the music industry… I was originally hired as a personal assistant to the owner, but as he hired 3 new artist managers, an entertainment lawyer and a Finance Manager, I became the assistant to them all within 4 months (not to mention all the kissing up you have to do to the artists themselves). I was salaried but based on an average 40hr. workweek I made only about $9.85 an hour. They hired an intern who got paid $9 an hour. I worked 12 hour days, went to shows to help set up stages, run errands and act as a go-between amongst publicists, radio promoters, producers and my bosses. After 2 years, I mentioned to my boss that I felt I deserved some kind of raise and asked if I couldn’t get at least an even $10 per hour. He said that my work was definitely well deserved of a raise and that we would discuss it. Two days later, he called me into his office and gave me two checks – my paycheck, and what he called a “bonus” for my hardwork (it was $100). Then he proceeded to tell me that he’d promised his family a Carribean vacation and with private school tuition going up, he had no choice but to let me go. It was either my salary or his daughter’s education. My first thought was “you live in the HAMPTONS of Long Island, NY, not Harlem for crying out loud, send her to public school”, but I said nothing. However, they had me finish out the day, including cleaning the studio, preparing food for the incoming artists, shipping all the royalties documents to the various publishing companies, etc. I left the office at 11pm that day. Within a few weeks, most of the other employees had quit once they found out that I was fired (although he still kept the intern!). He thought I had convinced them to do so and I was blackmailed from any job I tried to get in the music industry after that. Oh well, the company is bankrupt now, the music industry isn’t doing anything near what they used to profit and I am currently making more than he did, so I guess what goes around comes around!
