Burned and Burned Again
“It was the best of times,it was the worst of times”… My wife and I had just purchased our first home at the beginning of Sept ’08 and were expecting the birth of our first child a couple of months after that. We are both insurance professionals and were going to be able to make ends meet and put money aside for our soon to be born son’s future.
That was untill the first weekend of that Oct. I was helping a friend get and old car running and ready for a bomber car race. Everything changed in a flash starting that day. The old Ford backfired through the carburetor. Flames shot up under the hood and I instantly ignited. I didn’t realize that gasoline had soaked into the skin on my hands and arms. When the fire that was consuming my skin didn’t go out right away, I knew this wasn’t gonna be good.
Skipping over the gruesome details, I ended up in the Arizona Burn Center. They took great care of me and my wounds. I was pretty quick to regain the use of my hands and cultivate new skin. I returned to work in what I thought was record time considering what had happened to me. Not to mention the vacation time that I had accumulated was running out.
I can remember how great it felt returning to work that morning. I settled into my desk at the front of the small Allstate Agency and began hash through some of my daily duties. The owner/agent’s wife called me into her office to welcome me back and to get more details on what I had been going through.
As I was returning to my desk, the agent/owner called me into his office. He wanted to know how I was doing, and to also let me know that I no longer had a job. I couldn’t believe it, my first day back from a tradgedy and now I’m getting laid off! I have a child about to be born and a new mortgage to worry about. OMG!
I wasted no time looking for another job in the insurance industry, but with the economy going to hell in a handbasket, weeks went by without any real prospects. found lots of what I considered to be scams though, but I’ll save that for another time.
Since then, My son has been born and I am a stay at home dad. I can get a low paying job, but with the cost of childcare, it wouldn’t be prudent. We currently live check to check on my wife’s salary after cutting all the fat from our budget. I hope this fall to start classes at the community college if we can afford it. I want to change my profession and become an RN and work at the AZ Burn Center. Most people wouldn’t beable to stomache it, but I would love the opportunity to help others through the tramatic experience of being burned.
