Cruel Lay Off!
I worked for as a defense contractor for five years until I, along with four other co-workers, were given the pink slip in January 2007. I must also mention that rumors were flying around the office and through the Director\’s Assistant for a few weeks, but no confirmation had been stamped on the pink slip yet.
In November 2006, I discovered that I had breast cancer again! Went into the hospital to have a double mastectomy, recovered at home for 30 days, and returned back to work the first week in January 2007. A few weeks later, the Executive Assistant sent us an “EMAIL” stating our lay off date, then called us in a meeting a few days later to confirm it. I was left high and dry with no health insurance and no paycheck, but worst of all, unfinished surgery and no chemotheraphy!!
During our lay off period, Not once did we see or meet with the Director, as a matter of fact, for some reason that person all of a sudden went on travel, hmmm? We were told that there was no more money in the budget, therefore our positions would be terminated. But, after a few weeks of losing our jobs, we found out that four people were hired in our positions, and hate to go there but, we were replaced with an all white staff. Yup, you guessed it, me and my other three co-workers are African American! But, I believe in Karma, because the same Director was fired a few months ago, and now the agency has only “1” African American worker in the office. But that\’s not the best of it, before the Director was fired, her Assistant left her high and dry and sought a new job with another agency! Hmmm?
