The job and the baby

After coming back to a company that I had left a year before, I was happy to be back, happy to have my old boss back and (for the most part) content with the work that I did. I was an outside sales representative for a wholesaler. I made decent money and the only issue that I had was the commute. I didnt like driving 70 miles, just to get to my office. That was a drag.

Just to be clear and open about my job, I know I wasn’t the greatest sales person they had. But I was fair and attentive to my customers and I always got them what they needed, when they needed it. I was also one of 7 (out of 23) that earned an end of the year bonus. So I figured I was doing something right.

Anyway, I was on my way home for the day when my boss texted me. He never texts me, ever. Asks where I am? I call him.

“Is everything alright?”
“Where are you?”
“I’m here, why?”
“I need to talk to you either today or tomorrow?”
Jokingly, “do I still have a job?” At this point in the recession, it was kind of a half joke that had been going around for a while.
“That’s what I need to talk to you about.”
“Am I getting laid off?”
“I’m afraid so, can you meet me (insert local pub)?”
“I’ll be there in 25 minutes.”

A few kickers to the whole situation…
1. I had just bought a new truck back in January, I got laid off the last day of February.

2. I was just about to announce that I was pregnant with my second child. I had only told a few people (very close friends) because I had just miscarried the October before.

3. I was one month away from finishing my bachelor’s degree in business administration.

4. It was just before bonuses were to be disbursed. Luckily for me, they paid them out anyway along with a few weeks of severance and vacation pay (if you had any time on the books).

So, as of right now, I’m 6 months along and looking VERY pregnant. While I’m sure I’m very qualified and have several intereviews with potential employers, after the first in-person interview, I don’t hear back from them. I’m not saying that there may not be other people who are better suited for a position, but it’s awfully coincidental that I can have several phone interviews and then after an in-person interview, nothing. Oh well. I’m confident that something will come my way. While I’m happy I’m not with my previous company anymore, I could and would rejoice in my new found freedom a lot more if I had a source of income.

Baby boy due in September 2009.
