Worst I ever heard
An accountant I used to work with told me one of his layoff experiences, and it tops anything I’ve ever heard or been through myself.
A Steel company located in Portland, OR was going through a series of management changes and company re-organizations in the 1950′s. During one particularly black period, layoffs were performed using the “musical desks” methodology. What\s that? After everyone had gone home on Friday, the new org charts came out, and the managers went to work re-setting the team structure. The desks were then re-arranged over the weekend to fit the new structure.
When you came in on Monday, you looked for your desk. If you found one, you found your new team. If you didn’t find one, that meant you had been laid off. This went on every week. For a MONTH. Can you imagine the morale there?

Quite certain I could go one better on this. I have a tale I tell where , as the new person in 45 companies, I have always always been given the broken chair.. the only broken chair in the office. Sounds similar to above co.

I got one better than musical desk…get a pink slip via text message reading, “Change in PERSONEL”. Nice.
