back when, i couldnt find any job..so i know how you feel. i have 2 undergrad degrees, one in mechanical engineering and another one is car design. i think i applied for every job possible.. didnt care where or what.. and even that didnt help.. for lunch, i went to Jack In The Box and got two 1.99 lunch special for lunch and fro dinner... now ive been working for 8 years overseas simply because i couldnt find a job in America. I still thank those nice people who offered me jobs that got me by those unbelievably difficult times to where i am today.

once i was on my way to my aunt's house to borrow some money and my tire blew up because it was simply worn out. I drove my car to the next garage and asked a nice mexican man that i only had 10 dollars and if he had anythig ror that.. he said wel there is a teller machine over there.. and i said thats nice but alls i gots is this ten dollar bill period.. he looked at me and said ok.. thank you nice mexican man.. gracias amigo..

I live in the DC metro area also (hotel industry), and I've been on unemployment before. I know what you mean about people teasing that you're on unemployment. In my case I was fired a few years ago because I had the guts to stick up for myself at work, and I was on unemployment for two months before finding a job. Nevertheless, the only one who truly knows and understands your circumstances is you, so don't let others get you down just because you're down on your luck. I would also ask them to show proof that you were not willing and available to work during this time. If you turned down job offers that's one thing, but if not that sounds like a company trying to get out of paying someone their due cheaply. Hang in there...I've been through it and I know it's not fun.
