I still thank those nice people who offered me jobs that got me by those unbelievably difficult times to where i am today. once i was on my way to my aunt's house to borrow some money and my tire blew up because it was simply worn out. I know what you mean about people teasing that you're on unemployment. In my case I was fired a few years ago because I had the guts to stick up for myself at work, and I was on unemployment for two months before finding a job. Nevertheless, the only one who truly knows and understands your circumstances is you, so don't let others get you down just because you're down on your luck. I would also ask them to show proof that you were not willing and available to work during this time. If you turned down job offers that's one thing, but if not that sounds like a company trying to get out of paying someone their due cheaply.
