A Slight Detour??
Do you ever take a step back and wonder if the path you’ve chosen is the right one?
Well, a little over 2 years ago, after contemplating this very question, I decided to take a detour. I left a well paying job with a behemoth company, to join a smaller business with a team of young, entrepreneurial and creative people. What this new team lacked in practical business knowledge they had ten-fold in passion. It was an exciting time. I made less money, but I felt like I was a part of something.
What I neglected to factor in was that in a time of economic challenge, passion does not pay the bills.
I survived two rounds of lay offs last year… and as a result I took on more and more responsibility (someone had to do the work of my fallen colleagues). Then we were furloughed to 4 day weeks. Which allowed me to do the work of 3 people, in 4 days, for 80% of the salary…. (don’t forget that I was already making less money to begin with!). Then the other shoe dropped, or in this case I prefer to say the other shoe then promptly hit me in the behind! The owners of my small company decided to sell the business. Ready for the utmost irony? They actually sold the business to that Behemoth I used to work for. Talk about a kick in the pants! The announcement was made and virtually everyone in the company was given notice. I received 2 weeks, an offer that they’d help me “find me a job” (where… no one is hiring??), and barely a thank you for all that I had sacrificed over the last couple of years. Am I bitter? Some days yes and some days no… I’m trying very hard to look on the bright side.. Maybe this is yet another slight detour from my current path.
I have actually started blogging about my own daily challenges & struggles of trying to live in this unfamiliar world of leisure time. This blog is my attempt to provide some levity to an otherwise really crappy situation. You can follow my daily musings at www.activeleisure.wordpress.com
And to all those who are currently in the same shoes I’m in (or perhaps the same pajamas). Good luck with your job search!
