"This past summer I actually volunteered to work overseas for 3 months in a new client services role, different from my role back here in the states."

The "winds" of your workplace shifted while you were offshore and you could not pick up on it.

"The department I was in had 3 new employees that were still in their 90 probation period." and "I could’ve easily been told due to the staff reduction we’re killing the new role and will be in my original/current position for the indefinite future."

Probably those employees are either cheaper to pay than you or will be laid off also at the end of their 90 days.

"I saw in his eyes he genuinely felt bad about having to do this but either way the damage was done."

Sure he felt bad but not bad enough to have figured out some way for you to have stayed. Or it was out of his hands for you to stay- ie your salary was too much or someone higher than him did not want you to move into the other roles.

Virginia your story is very common. Longevity and dedication has a shelf life too and many people get blindsided when they dont include this real life fact into their value or belief system. The emotional price paid is just a devestating as the financial price that is paid. I have felt that same feeling many times and each time it hasnt felt any better. We are in a "thanks but move on and forget it happened" society.

Hang in there bro and i hope you can take this experience and turn it into something positive and beneficial for your future. All the best!!

Hope things worked out for you. Go with you gut feelings thats why we have it. Get promises in writing when youre dealing with your employer. That makes it a legal binding. If they cannot commit to you in that fashion then by all means do not make a personal financial decision for them especially when you will be the victim of circumstances.

Hang in there Mary. Many of us with great resumes and experience are facing the same problem of applying for numerous jobs and receiving nothing in return. I hate being unemployed and it isnt even my fault which really depresses me. The reality is that there are hundreds of applicants for a single position. It is a numbers game and it all depends on when someone sees your resume in the pile.

I agree that longevity doesnt hold its weight anymore. It only matters when you are looking for employment but once you land the job and stay there for 10 years your time of service has no merit when it is time to be laid off a week before christmas and 2 weeks before the bills are due.

This is a really sad reality that store owners or managers do this things. I have experienced being treated like this in a clothing store in somewhere in NC. The manager was watching me like a hawk like I would steal everything I touch.

I'm part filipino by the way

It's all about knowing the right people.

I worked for 10 years at a defense company. I received a solid raise ever year (include the year I was part of a huge engineering layoff.) Why did I lose my jobs in that layoff? Because I was the oldest one in my group... at a bit over 30-years of age! Oh, and I was the senior guy and thus the "most expensive." In the end, performance doesn't matter, as my story proves.

But who did keep their jobs after the company finished up destroying the careers of most of the actual senior engineering staff as well as sacrificial offerings like me? All the brown-nosers and connected people - the ones who never did an honest day's work in their lives and who were directly responsible for the company's problems! So, yes, it is who you know, not WHAT you know, that matters.
